He reveals the truth to all believers
“I have yet many things to say unto you, but you cannot bear
them now. Howbeit when He, the Spirit of
truth is come, He will guide you into all truth. For he shall not speak of Himself,
but whatsoever He shall hear, that shall He speak, and He will show you things
to come; He shall glorify me, for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it
unto you. All things that the Father hath are mine. Therefore said I, that He shall take of mine,
and shall shew it unto you.”
This panoramic revelation of the Spirit is summarised in three
ways. He will guide into all
truth…He will shew things to come…He will reveal the things of Christ. He will teach them Theology, Prophecy, and Christology-such breadth and depth of things that will occupy
their minds for life. There is a definite article with the word
truth, so it should read “all the truth”; like Paul said, “the whole counsel of
God”, the faith, the truth, as it says in the epistles. They did not have the whole truth, they had
parts of it, they only had the Old Testament scriptures and the teaching of the
Lord. There was much more to come, like Church truth, the truth of the gospel, practical truth for living. It would be the Holy Spirit who would guide
them into all the truth. He said the
Spirit would bring all things to their remembrance, that is His teachings and
miracles which are contained now in the gospel records. He will gently lead them into New Testament
epistle teaching, by revelation to the apostles and prophets. He will reveal things to come, all of which
are in the New Testament writings and in particular the book of
Revelation. The entire revelation of God
is now available to us through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Specifically He will unfold the things of
Christ, for the entire scriptures of truth are primarily to the glory of
Christ. The work of the Spirit is to
guide His people and to glorify Christ.
